Esta peça colaborativa é inspirada por alquimistas experimentais, como Henning Brand. Black Gold (Ouro Negro) reporta o processo lento necessário para criar o líquido condensado de ouro preto.
Afastando-se da sua origem dourada, foram destilados 700 ml de urina até à matéria escura, com cheiro a galinha. Este projeto foi iniciado com o intuito de descobrir cristais na urina.
Esta obra explora também a crescente possibilidade de criação de riqueza a partir de material biológico: hormonas, enzimas, anticorpos monoclonais, podem tornar-se compostos valiosos pelo seu potencial terapêutico.
Tal como o Petróleo, frequentemente designado ouro negro, influenciou a distribuição mundial de riqueza no século XX, os produtos biotecnológicos poderão fazer o mesmo neste novo século.

This collaborative piece is inspired by experimental alchemists like Henning Brand. Black Gold reports the slow process required to create the condensed liquid of black gold. Moving away from its golden origin, 700 ml of urine were distilled into the dark, chicken-scented liquid. This project was initiated with the aim of discovering crystals in the urine.
This work explores the increasing ability to generate wealth from biological materials: hormones, enzymes, or monoclonal antibodies can become valuable compounds for their therapeutic potential. In the same way that oil, often named black gold, influenced the world distribution of wealth in the XXth century, biotechnology compounds have the potential to generate a similar impact in this new century.

Marta de Menezes (PT) tem vindo a explorar a intersecção entre a arte e a biologia, trabalhando em laboratórios de investigação de forma a provar que as novas tecnologias biológicas podem também elas ser um meio para a criação em belas-artes. É desde 2009 diretora das associações culturais Ectopia, em Lisboa, e Cultivamos Cultura, em Odemira.
Hege Tapio (NOR) tem cultivado uma prática artística interligada aos novos meios, novas tecnologias e ciência. O seu trabalho tem sido apresentado nacional e internacionalmente. Tanto como artista ou consultora, tem participado em projetos comissariados por diferentes entidades, e realizado vários projetos de curadoria. Tapio é fundadora do arte do i / o / lab – Centro de Arte Futura.
Mark Lipton (CA) é professor na School of English and Theatre Studies da University of Guelph. Trabalha nas secções transversais dos media e da educação, onde as conceções sobre os media, a cultura e a aprendizagem atuam em contexto de espetáculo, performance e identidade. Tem investigado sobre Teoria Queer, soberania do corpo, alfabetização mediática e bioética.

Marta de Menezes (PT) has been exploring the intersection between art and biology, working in research laboratories in order to prove that new biological technologies can also be a means for creation in fine arts. Since 2009 Menezes is the director of cultural associations Ectopia, in Lisbon, and Cultivamos Cultura, in Odemira.
Hege Tapio (NOR) has cultivated an artistic practice linked to new media, new technologies and science. Tapio’s work has been presented nationally and internationally. As an artist or consultant, she has participated in projects commissioned by different entities, and carried out several curatorial projects. Tapio is the founder of the art of i / o / lab – Center of Future Art.
Mark Lipton (CA) is a professor at the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He works at the cross-sections of media and education, where conceptions about media, culture and learning act across contexts of spectacle, performance and identity. Current research interests include Queer Theory, body sovereignty, media literacy and bioethics.
