Copper Bodies: Re-activating the archive

Durante a sua residência no âmbito do projeto Biofriction, Kira O’Reilly tinha como foco as Baterias da Menopausa e a ideia de sistemas circulares, porém alguns dos elementos da instalação “Copper Bodies” (Corpos de Cobre) foram reciclados e reutilizados. Essa instalação foi feita in situ, no e com o contexto da exposição Just40, em 2015, ao reunir elementos de cobre e ao criar sal de cobre (sal e vinagre num recipiente de cobre), como também alguma urina (com a sua saturação de hormonas conservadoras) que foi utilizada para criar uma patina sobre alguns dos fios finos de cobre. Nem todos os materiais foram encontrados.
A maioria do sal de cobre foi reutilizado em batas de laboratório vermelhas e em “desenhos” de sal de cobre, em papel de aguarela. Os desenhos de sal de cobre parecem inacabados, e talvez possam vir a ser trabalhados novamente Contudo, o meio desta obra não é o papel, a tela, o cobre ou o sal; é um corpo: o corpo da artista.

During Biofriction residency, the focus of which was Menopausal Batteries and ideas of circuitry, elements of the “Copper Bodies” installation were recycled and re-used. The piece was made in situ, in and with the exhibition context of Just40, 2015 gathering the copper elements and creating copper salt (salt and vinegar in a copper container), also some urine (with its saturation of the curators hormones) was used to create a patina on some of the fine copper wire. Not all of the materials were found. The majority of the copper salt was reused on red paper laboratory coats and on copper salt drawings’ on watercolor paper. The copper salt drawings feel unfinished, and perhaps can be worked on again in the fullness of time. Yet, the medium here isn’t paper, canvas, copper or salt; it is a body: the artist’s body.

Kira O’Reilly é uma artista que vive em Helsínquia; a sua obra é intencionalmente interdisciplinar e indisciplinada, provém de um background de artes visuais; parte da performance, biotécnica e escrita para integrar reconfigurações especulativas em redor do Corpo. Desde a sua licenciatura na University of Wales Institute Cardiff, em 1998, o seu trabalho tem sido exposto no Reino Unido, Europa, Austrália, China e México. Também o tem apresentado em conferências e simpósios. Ela escreve, ensina, orienta e colabora com humanos de vários tipos e tecnologias e não humanos de numerosas divergências incluindo musgos, aranhas, o sol, porcos, culturas celulares, cavalos, microrganismos, bicicletas, rios, paisagens, tundras, rochas, árvores, sapatos, comida, livros, ar, lua e corvos.

Kira O’Reilly is a Helsinki based artist; her practice, both wilfully interdisciplinary and entirely undisciplined, stems from a visual art background; it employs performance, biotechnical practices and writing with which to consider speculative reconfigurations around The Body. Since graduating from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 1998 her work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, China and Mexico. She has presented at conferences and symposia. She writes, teaches, mentors and collaborates with humans of various types and technologies and non-humans of numerous divergences including mosses, spiders, the sun, pigs, cell cultures, horses, micro-organisms, bicycles, rivers, landscapes, tundras, rocks, trees, shoes, food, books, air, moon and ravens.
